Ever wonder how coffee is sourced, selected and ultimately decided upon? Well today is your lucky day - we're giving you some insight into this super secretive process.
Every coffee company sources coffee beans differently. Some travel to far away, remote locations across the globe to find one specific lot that is growing a coffee profile they're looking for. Some don't travel at all and rely on wholesale coffee providers. Some are a combination of both. But all coffee company's take into account a few factors when selecting their coffee.
1.) Region
The region in which coffee is grown has much to do with its flavor, size of bean and roasting technique needed. Coffee beans have different flavor profiles which are attributes of the soils (minerals, water, etc.) the coffee plants are grown in. For instance, some Central and South American beans tend to be grown in higher elevations in between volcanic valley's which have higher concentrations of nutty and citrus flavors. Some African and Indonesian beans grown in lower elevations tend to have more fruity and earthy flavors. All beans, depending on the growing variables, output a different size - ultimately affecting the roasting technique.

2.) Quantity
Some coffee lots will produce thousands of pounds of green coffee beans in a given yield. Some will produce just a few pounds - under 100. This quantity available, and the flavor profiles it outputs, creates either a rare bean or a "base" bean - "base" meaning a bean typically used within a blend that is of average flavor profile. Lots which produce a rare bean usually have low bean yields. This is where you typically find lots that output single-origin or single-lot coffee's. This means they are not blended with other beans to create flavor profiles; rather the only flavors found within the bean represent the coffee. Coffee companies select the beans they need to either fulfill a line of coffee or a blend they craft.

3.) Price
Price is often the last attribute coffee companies look at when determining if they will utilize beans. Depending on the company, the quality of the coffee outweighs the cost - ensuring their customers a premium coffee drinking experience.
We at Carpo Coffee tend to look for coffee beans that are solely single-origin. Single-origin beans offer distinct flavors that are much more bold when served on their own. We also strive to provide our customers with a variety of coffee from different regions across the world. Lastly, we don't skimp on the cost of great beans. We understand that great beans yield great coffee, favorable outcomes and customer satisfaction.
